An average of 50,000 prisoners marry in Mexican prisons a year, most of them men. While it is generally understood that men usually do not get bitter to marry, prison changes that principle quickly. Marriage is very important to a prisoner - that is, financial support during imprisonment, residence after release (which is an important argument for early release), emotional bonding, and escape from loneliness.
However, marriage is also largely the only possibility for a prisoner to have sexual intercourse during imprisonment. For example, a long-term meeting can only be requested as a partner if the couple has at least two children and have lived together for at least two years before imprisonment, the Imprisonment Act states. And even then the prison may in some cases refuse to meet.
