The statement says the Swedish star died Monday after a 17-year battle with cancer.

Following a solo career, Marie Fredriksson teamed up with Per Gessle in 1986 to form the pop duo Roxette, which launched them into the international spotlight.

The pair is best known for the songs "It Must Have Been Love" from 1986, "Listen to Your Heart" from 1988 and "The Look" from 1988.

Fredriksson was first diagnosed with a severe brain tumor in 2002, according to the statement.

Gessle, 60, thanked his late musical companion for "everything."

"You were an outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer," he said in a statement. "Thanks for painting my black and white songs in the most beautiful (colors). You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years."

Fredriksson leaves behind her husband and two children, the statement says.
