The victims had gathered in the backyard of a dwelling where an unknown suspect came in and opened fire, Fresno police spokesman Bill Dooley told reporters at a news conference, Wezto reports.
Police went to the scene after receiving several phone calls at 8 p.m.
Fresno Police Deputy Chief Michael Reid said four men aged between 25 and 30 died as a result of the shooting. One of them was taken to a hospital where his life could not be saved.
Six more people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening bullet wounds, Reid said.
About 35 people had gathered in the house for a football watching party. According to Reid, there is nothing to suggest that the suspect knew the victims.
According to Dooley, nothing is known about the suspect or his vehicle at first.
